"COPMANHURST will be abuzz with angling activity all weekend when the 2014 Bass Invitational hits the Clarence River.

Thirty five teams of two will compete for more than $2000 in prizes at this year's event, with anglers coming from as far as Gold Coast and Sydney to raid the local waters.

From 5.30am until 1pm on Saturday and 5.30am until 11am on Sunday competitors will be permitted to fish anywhere along the Clarence River from Copmanhurst to Grafton Bridge and up the Orara River as far as Tindal Bridge, with the overall weigh-in of the best two bass on both days tallied in the final results.

Organisers Jay and Ryan Cochrane, who own Greef Clothing, are looking forward to competing, fishing from their beloved dinghy "Savage".

This is the third year the brothers have run the event and they predict unpredictability.

"It's been a weird season for bass," Ryan said. "We've had no floods, so big ones up the Gorge haven't been out yet.

"There's been a few good bass around but they're scattered throughout the river and a bit hard to locate.

"There's a few new blokes this year who are keen fishermen and a lot of out-of-towners who have fished the rivers before and know that it's renowned for bass."

Locals Rick Gough and Scott Sutherland have won the past two years and will be back again in an attempt to make it three in a row. Raffles will be run throughout the weekend to raise funds for Movember.
